Starting on the Friday after Ascension Thursday, Catholic faithful around the world gather to pray for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon their families, their communities, and their world.
The original novena took place after Jesus ascended into heaven and His disciples, (the scriptures tell us about 120 in number), followed Jesus’ instructions by remaining in Jerusalem and waited for the promised ‘gift of the Father’, the Holy Spirit. They gathered in the upper room for prayer, and not insignificant, of these 120 only Mary, the Mother of Jesus is mentioned by name.
During the nine days between the Ascension and Pentecost the followers of Jesus prayed for the Holy Spirit to come. And we do the same today.
